Chapter fifteen

Dawn had left us with new information that could open the case up, but to where … we weren’t entirely sure yet. I arrived at the shop the next morning, just before lunch, after another long night going over evidence with Ethan. Jasper was nowhere to be seen, and Edlynn and Thomas sat in the reading corner, sharing a pot of tea and looking over a pile of vintage magazines.

“We’re getting some inspiration for the swing dance competition,” Edlynn said. “How did you go with Ethan?”

“Sounds like some important business you are involved with there, Daisy,” Thomas said. “I imagine you are taking it as seriously as it should be.”

“Yes … yes, I am taking it seriously. The investigation is moving in a good direction. What about the two of you? How has the shop been this morning?”

“No problems,” Edlynn said. “Just like I told you it would be. Thomas stopped in for a tea, and we are going to The Cidered Apple later for a Rosé. We used to do it once a month with your aunt. Ailsa can’t make it, but we thought we would go, anyway. You’re welcome to join us if you like. We might even stay for some of John’s pub grub, if you’re interested.”

“Thanks, but maybe next time, if that’s OK. It’s been a long couple of days.”

“Of course,” Thomas said. “But if you have a minute, I wanted to talk to you about something … the bad review in the Gazette …”

“You heard about it too?” I asked.

“Yes,” he said. “And I think it’s quite obviously someone with a personal vendetta. And, well, I have a friend – a client actually – who told me that, although they couldn’t reveal who the mystery shopper was, the reviewer is someone that has a history with the shop. They couldn’t tell me any more than that, but I thought if I told you, then maybe you could look through Olivia’s records for some answers. Maybe she kept a journal – or records for her readings?”

“I haven’t come across a journal, but I’m getting the feeling my aunt wasn’t afraid of ruffling feathers.”

Edlynn swiped imaginary dust from her skirt. “I have to say, Thomas, you weren’t as forthcoming when Ailsa and I were trying to find out where Daisy was.”

“Edlynn …” he said, “you know Olivia held client confidentiality with me. She was very specific about Daisy coming here. She didn’t want to push her. It had to be Daisy’s decision. There was nothing I could do about it. You have to understand: my reputation as a solicitor depends on trusted confidentiality. But the conversation I had about Daisy’s review was a friendly conversation with a client, a favour, a thank you. I only brought it up at lunch with them because I was reading it when my client arrived. They said if they had seen it before it went to print, she wouldn’t have allowed it, because there was a known history with Olivia.”

“She?” Edlynn asked.
